Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need coaching experience?

You don’t need extensive prior coaching experience. Still, you should understand the fundamentals of the game, have strong communication skills, plenty of patience, passion, and leadership, as you’ll work with youth players. Experience playing basketball or coaching is a big plus.

Who can volunteer?

We welcome volunteers who care about basketball and want to help young players grow. Volunteers should be reliable, set a good example for local youth, and be committed to making our teams a safe and supportive place.

You can apply to volunteer with the Splash Boys if you are a local college or high school student with basketball experience, a parent or family member who wants to support your child, a former player or coach, or a community member interested in supporting our efforts.

What is the time commitment?

We need committed coaches and assistant coaches to support our teams with basketball practices 2 times a week. If you want to volunteer as a fundraiser, you can put in as much time as your schedule allows.

Let us know in the form how much time you can volunteer for the Splash Boyz.

Where do volunteers work?

Our teams’ weekly practice takes place at The PAC Training Facility in Lake Elsinore, CA, so as a coach/assistant coach, you’ll need to join us there. We’ll give you all the information after you become a volunteer, so don’t hesitate to apply.

As a volunteer fundraiser, you can help us remotely or visit us in person at any time. We’ll discuss the funding we need to raise for our basketball teams, including facility fees, equipment, and travel expenses.

How do I sign up to volunteer?

Start by filling out our application form. Tell us about your experience with basketball and coaching, or with fundraising, and let us know how much time you are willing to volunteer. We’ll review your application and contact you as soon as possible.

As a coach, do I need to train beginner-level players?

Our basketball programs are for tournament-only teams, so all players have at least 2 years of experience and are above beginner level. You’ll support players who play basketball on a competitive level.

Will I need to travel out of the state?

Yes, as a coach, you’ll travel outside of the state when selected basketball teams participate in tournaments.

Do coaches need to train players year-round?

Yes, we need coaches and assistant coaches who can train our youth teams year-round, across all seasons, with 2 practices per week plus weekend games.

Is there training or orientation for volunteers?

Yes, you’ll work with our experienced coaches who’ll explain everything you need to know about volunteering with our nonprofit, from our mission and core values, to role responsibilities and expectations on working with the teams.

Will I get any official recognition or certificate?

Yes. Students volunteering with the Splash Boyz can earn community service hours for high school or college applications. Volunteer coaches receive a certificate after completing one year of service.

Do I need to go through a background check?

Yes, all of our volunteer and assistant coaches need to undergo a background check.

Can I help your nonprofit in other ways?

Yes! If you have other ways you can help us beyond coaching and fundraising, please let us know. We accept monetary donations, in-kind donations, partnership proposals, and other creative suggestions to support our mission.
